HONG KONG HANDOVER

In 1997, the British handed Hong Kong back to its original owners, the Chinese. During this pivotal time, many Hong Kong locals took to the streets in marches, most notably to commemorate the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, as a protest against the incoming Chinese government. At the same time, the Chinese organised staged events and celebrations for their newly-regained colony, which were seen by many as exercises in propaganda. In regaining modern Hong Kong, the Chinese not only inherited Hong Kong's economic prosperity but also many of its unseen social problems.
